About the Green River Bibionid Fly |
| The Bibionid Fly (Plecia pealei ) is the most common insect found in the sedimentary layers (some up to 2,000 feet deep) of the Green River Formation. They were a March fly from the Eocene period of about 50-60 million years ago (the time of the dinosaurs) and come from an oil shale layer within the formation. |
About the Green River Water Striders |
| The Water Strider (Telmatrechus parallelus) Also known as a Pond Skater. These are the insects which look like giant mosquitos that you might see walking across the top of a pond. These Striders are relatively RARE and are sometimes found among the fossil fish in the Green River Formation which was deposited during the Eocene period about 50-60 million years ago (the time of the dinosaurs). Since the legs and wings on these insects are so fine, delicate and hard to see, they have been lightly enhanced at the quarry. We think you will like these little critters.
